Quaint, picturesque and elegant. That s Sorrento, our base for 4 days.

At a very convenient 3 ½ hour, easy drive (265 kms) from Rome’s airports, the town is the perfect introduction to this paradise. (Or you can just take the train). Sorrento is lively, with plenty of bars, restaurants (and some easy shopping) and it connects very well to the other towns. Hugely importantly…. many more accommodation options and better value for money (as compared to Positano or Capri). So makes a great base for day trips to Amalfi, Ravello, Positano and Capri, just in case you don’t have the time stay in all. (A day trip to Pompei – Don’t Bother – IMO)

A single main avenue leading to the town church, packed with adorable shops, bars restaurants and gelaterias Strolling into the numerous small lanes to the right of the Piazza, going towards the sea..the eateries are much nicer and so much more pocket friendly.

Lessons Learnt ) – so hubby and I enjoy having a nibble and a drink n at a bar / trattoria n then strolling  on to do the same at another..n another..(basically makes it a more romantic, strolly, chatty looong evening).  Well not here- most places in Italy (Sorrento back then, was our 1st experience with this), have a €2-4 cover charge..so ‘trattoria hopping’ can add up to an unnecessary €12-20 by the end of each evening..

On our trying to be thrifty evenings- a supermarket bottle of wine on the beach.(more romantic actually)..

Oh and that sunset is yet to be paralleled…

To the far right overlooking the sea, are the luxury hotels and the best views. And far down below is the waterfront promenade, with these ‘jetty’ type platforms, built over the water. Sorrento’s downtown, doesn’t have a beach ‘per se’.

You don’t really wade into the sea – you climb down stairs (laugh emoji)

You don’t really wade into the sea – you climb down stairs 😀

We lucked out on the sweetest B&B in Sorrento- Casa Mazzola (thank you Trip Advisor).Luigi and Ugo – a big hug to you both for making it such a happy and carefree start to our trip..
