Eating out in Italy..

The Italians take their meals very seriously. And leisurely. Its 3 courses at a minimum. Primi- the 1st, the starch- Pasta, Pizza, Rissotto. Segondo- Meat, Fish. Aaaanddd Dolci – Dessert. Antipasti or the appetizers are in addition to (prior to) all of this!

Thankfully, a lot of restaurants have started offering pasta half portions. Coz ive never ever been able to go beyond 2 courses, at one go. Lunch or dinner, sit back, relax and savour; and give it a couple of hours atleast. Oh and the wine is a must-do. “When in Rome do as the Romans do”, right? ?? .

To start with- the italians have elevated sandwiches to sheer gastronomy. It aint just bread, slathered with mayo and some stuffings. Its a PANINI!!

If M, who considers a ’sandwich’ to never be a meal – calls something ‘drool-worthy’, trust me – its something else! Grilled eggplant and arugula, grilled peppers, sun dried tomatoes, straciatella and ricotta, the insane array of salames, pestos. Mind boggling.

Why am talking about ‘sandwiches’? Just look up You Tube videos of Caseificcio Borderi’ in Ortigia Sicily!?.

And then there s the ‘Gelato’. A fun thing to do – go on your own ‘gelato quest’..have 1 every day (or 2 or 3 -ull be walking it all off anyways) and score them. The hunt for the perfect gelato! Kids ll love this one

Thing is, its not just about the Pastas & Pizzas..

Also there s such a wide range of flavours that change from region to region (Between Venice- in the north, Tuscany, Rome, Amalfi and further south to Sicily – ‘Italian’ food takes on a new meaning –along with the landscape.

Oh and definitely look out for a good ‘enoteca’ near wherever U re staying (wine bar, cheese and meat boards, a few appetizers)..Its a great way to start the evening, stroll some and then head to dinner.

M and I have had some of our most cherishable evenings this way. Most neighbourhood have a smart bar/ enoteca. Just walk into whichever one seems to have the most people milling around. The locals know best!

You basically cant go wrong with food in Italy..

As long as you totttaalllly steer clear of the eateries with these large easels out front with combo deals….

Make sure there s someone with you, who ll grab you by the shirt and drag you away from these- no matter how hungry you are!
